Employee Wellbeing Online Seminar 2021

Protecting and promoting mental health at work

Information

26 May 2021
ONLINE SEMINAR

Both globally, and in South Africa, workplaces are in a precarious state of transition, reforming themselves to meet the challenges of the economic and political uncertainty cause by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group’s (SADAG) recent survey on Covid-19 and mental health, highlighted some of the following challenges, experienced during lockdown:

  • 55%: Anxiety and panic
  • 46%: Financial stress and pressure
  • 40%: Depression
  • 30%: Poor family relations
  • 12%: Feelings of suicide
  • 6%: Substance abuse

There’s no doubt, the disruption caused by the pandemic has placed unprecedented levels of stress on people’s work and family life. This has led to a deterioration in employee health and wellbeing; a situation that cannot afford to be ignored in the workplace:

According to the World Health Organisation, depression and anxiety cost companies an estimated $1-trillion in productivity every year. While in South Africa alone, the absenteeism and presentism productivity losses associated with mental health issues are estimated at 28 days a year for anxiety disorders and 27 days per year for depression.

In order to protect and promote the mental health of employees, employers will need to put into place programmes to ensure that mental health problems are recognised early and treated effectively. We’ve put together the Employee Wellbeing Online Seminar to empower and educate managers, HR practitioners and employers across the spectrum with the insights, evidence and practical tools to better manage mental health in the workplace.

SETA grants and accreditation requirements

Many of our delegates enquire about the accreditation of our events. There is a misconception that organisations qualify for SETA grants only for accredited programmes. This is not correct. The payment of SETA grants is regulated by the Government Gazette, no. 9867, Vol. 570, 3 December 2012, no. 35940. These Regulations clearly state that the SETAs “must allocate a mandatory grant to a levy paying employer” that has submitted a WSP and ATR by the regulated date, has provided all the information required in the regulated template, and is up to date with skills levy payments. Furthermore, the template in the Regulations (Section C: Skills Development) allows employers to include ALL planned training in the report; not only accredited programmes.
