HR professionals are increasingly required to build trust and credibility by providing reliable evidence for their initiatives, policies and decisions. This interactive workshop explores how people-relevant data can be accessed and analysed to achieve real work benefits.
Based on the leading book Research Methods in Human Resource Management
, this workshop develops the mind-set of the HR practitioner-researcher – someone who is curious, critical and committed to rigorous evaluation of evidence as a basis for applied and real-world HR decision-making.
The workshop will introduce a series of tools and techniques to help the HR practitioner to:
- Identify priority research issues;
- Formulate targeted research questions;
- Identify what’s already known and what still needs to be discovered about the issue;
- Identify appropriate data sources;
- Collect and analyse good quality data, and
- Use data analytics to form evidence-based conclusions and policy recommendations.
Day 1 will explore the fundamentals of evidence-based HR, data analytics, and the principles of applied practitioner-research and their importance in 21st century HR work.

- Understand the value of different types of evidence for effective HR decision-making.
- Build and maintain the trust of organisational stakeholders by developing evidence-based HR and talent policies.
- Confidently define a business issue, problem or opportunity, gather and analyse robust data to inform decision-thinking.
- Apply principles of data science and data analytics to HR situations and opportunities.
- Understand the place of research in the ‘HR toolkit’ of effective practitioners.
- Balance evidence from data analytics with other forms of qualitative data as a basis for sustainable HR practice.
- Recognise the value of multi-disciplinary expertise and variety in metrics, analytics, and impactful evidence-based HR.
- Confidently engage other stakeholders in evidence-based HR research to enhance impact and foster organisational change and development.
At the end of this two-day workshop, you will have the tools and knowledge to be able to:
- Identify a research focus. Link HR and business strategies to identify HR issues for research. Achieve focus through clear research objectives or questions, identify potential sources of information and how they might be accessed; plan the project and gain buy-in from other stakeholders.
- Find and review existing evidence. Identify what evidence already exists and where to find it; evaluate evidence for credibility, rigour and relevance; achieve synthesis between different information sources; identify what is already known and what further questions should be asked.
- Make the best use of organisational evidence. Understand what people analytics data and metrics are, where to find them, and how to use them. Evaluate additional types of evidence (written and visual). Identify the most appropriate and relevant forms of organisational evidence to answer your research question.
- Develop a research design. Highlight key differences between qualitative and quantitative data, decide what data to gather and when to clarify the relationship between research, theory and practice, make decisions about data quality.
- Analyse numerical data and data analytics. Make sense of basic terminology used in data analytics. Identify different sources of data and evaluate data reliability. Ensure data are collected, organised, and stored in an effective and ethical way. Use data analytics techniques to make sense of the data. Draw appropriate conclusions and identify implications for decision making.
- Interpret qualitative data. Identify the value of qualitative data for evidence-based HR. Collect and record qualitative data from interviews, focus groups or data from digital sources in a systematic and ethical way. Undertake data analysis in an appropriate, credible and trustworthy way. Formulate justifiable conclusions arising from your data analysis.
- Achieve impact, credibility and added value through evidence-based and impactful HR research. Identify the features of ethical, standards-driven HR practice and the implications for HR practitioner research. Plan how to achieve impact from your research. Communicate your conclusions and their implications to internal and external stakeholders in an impactful and credible way.

- Different approaches to evidence-based practice and the organisational benefits to be gained.
- Engaging other stakeholders in evidence-based HR processes and communicating outcomes to maximise impact.

About the workshop Facilitator - Valerie Anderson
Reader in Human Resource Development, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth Business School. Valerie Anderson’s academic career was preceded by extensive management and consultancy experience in a range of different public and private sector organisations. She is a committed researcher-practitioner, concerned to bring the best of research and practice together to challenge conventional wisdom and generate new ideas and practices. She specialises in learning and development in work organisations, particularly managerial coaching and organisational issues associated with strategic human resource development and the evaluation, measurement and assessment of learning. She has contributed to many UK Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) practice-based research projects and authored many practitioner-focused on-line practical tools. She is a member of the steering group for the annual International CIPD Applied Research Conference. She is author of the leading CIPD book: Research Methods in HRM, currently in its 4th edition.
Valerie Anderson is an expert member of the British Standards Institute Committee responsible for standards development in Human Capital Management and Development and led the development process for the first National Standard in Learning and Development - BS PD 76006: A Guide to Learning and Development. In October 2018 Dr Anderson was appointed Convenor of the ISO International Working Group to develop ISO 23595: Learning and Development in Organisations. Alongside her standards development work, she Chairs the Research Activities Committee for University Forum for HRD (UFHRD) and, until 2019 was Co-Editor of the leading international journal for Human Resource Development, Human Resource Development Quarterly which publishes cutting edge research into all aspects of learning, development and training in work organisations.
